At Balgowlah Family Dental Practice we believe in preventative techniques and teaching patients how to achieve and maintain oral health. Our treatment plans are conservative, however, we do place great emphasis on continuing education to keep abreast of the changes in modern dentistry.

We offer happy gas, bulk billing for children’s Medicare vouchers and the HICAPS service for convenient on-the-spot health fund claims.

Here is a list of our main services and treatments:

Scale and polish and gum disease prevention

Dental cleaning involves  removing plaque (the soft, sticky, bacteria infested film) and tartar (calculus) deposits that have built up on the teeth over time.

Children's dentistry

We aim to make sure that your child will never fear a visit to the dentist. With proper care, we can help to prevent cavities in the future and teach healthy habits to last a lifetime. We are well trained to restore first dentitions (baby teeth). In fact we like to see mothers during pregnancy to educate them about the  normal facial and dental development of their child.

Fillings and fissure seals

Sealants can protect your children’s back teeth against the need for fillings! Fissure sealants completely seal off the small grooves in the teeth, preventing any food particles or bacteria from getting in, without affecting the normal chewing function of teeth. We use white fillings for children and adults.

Crown and bridge work

A crown is a tooth shaped cap, made out of metal, ceramic or both and  placed over a tooth to strengthen and protect tooth structure. A bridge is a false tooth connected to a crown  to replace a missing tooth

A veneer is a thin layer of porcelain or a composite material designed to fit over the front surface of a damaged tooth. Veneers are designed to improve the colour, shape and position of your teeth.

An implant is a titanium device surgically inserted within the jaw bone to allow crowns and bridges  to be placed.

Root canal treatments

A root canal treatment is a procedure to treat an infection  inside the tooth (pulp)…or the ‘root canal’ system. The treatment removes the diseased tissue, and the remaining space is cleaned, shaped and filled, saving a tooth that may otherwise be lost.

A denture is  a set of replacement teeth that is fully removable. It can have a metal or acrylic  resin  base  and rely on suction or hooks to stay in.

Preventative orthodontics

Preventive orthodontic treatment is intended to keep a bad bite or crooked teeth from developing in an otherwise normal mouth. The goal is to provide adequate space for permanent teeth to erupt.

Myofunctional treatment

This therapy improves function of the oral and facial muscles. Myofunctional disorders can lead to teeth, sleep and speech problems.  Therapy can include facial and tongue exercises as well as certain ‘re-patterning’ techniques to promote proper tongue position, improved breathing, chewing, and swallowing.

TMJ treatment

The Temporomandibular joint is the connecting hinge between the lower  jaw and  the skull. TMJ disorders can cause pain around the ear and in the muscles that control jaw movement as well as headaches.  Clenching and grinding your teeth can cause TMJ pain.

Cosmetic dentistry

If you feel self conscious about your teeth, cosmetic treatments are designed to enhance your smile and can include any of the other mentioned procedures, as well as teeth whitening, bonding and reshaping.

Zoom Whitening

This is a cosmetic procedure designed to brighten your teeth and enhance your smile. A hydrogen peroxide whitening gel is applied to the teeth and a special light is applied to penetrate teeth and break up stains and discolouration The procedure takes 2 hours. Zoom whitening is also available in take home kits.

Sleep apnoea devices – Mandibular Repositioning Devices (MRDs)

These devices hold the lower jaw in a forward position during sleep to open the airway and manage snoring and sleep apnoea. We do recommend you a sleep study if you snore and wake up tired in the morning.

If you or your child participate in contact sport we strongly recommend a custom made  mouthguard. This will not only protect the  teeth but can also prevent concussion.
